If you have a different insurance, read on.

1. Call your insurance company.

We know it's a hassle, but it takes 5 minutes and can give you peace of mind!

Easiest method is to call the number on your insurance card.

The insurance company will typically ask for your name, date of birth, social security number, and insurance member ID.

Ask what your coverage is for
outpatient behavioral mental health services.

(wow that's a mouthful!)

Specifically, you can ask:

(1) Do I have a deductible?

(ie. Is there a minimum amount I need to spend before insurance starts to pay?)

(2) Do I have a copay or coinsurance?

(ie. If I don't have a deductible / after I meet my deductible, do you cover 100% of my fee, a percentage, or a fixed $ amount?)

(3) What are my out-of-network benefits?

(ie. If my therapist is not "in-network", how much do you cover?

"Therapist fee – Insurance coverage = How much you pay"
eg. Your therapist charges $150/hr – your insurance reimburses $90 = You will pay $60 for each session.)

Learn about these terms here.

If you don't have your insurance card with you, see insurance company phone numbers and hours in our "Insurances companies" section.

2. Learn about insurances.

Check out the these videos explaining the various insurance lingo.

3. Ask your therapist.

Your therapist may not be able to tell you exactly what your coverage is, but he/ she might be able to explain the basics. We're always happy to help too.
