Professional statement

Calvin Cruz is a Board-certified psychiatrist in Brooklyn, currently seeing patients via telepsychiatry throughout New York City and surrounding areas. Dr. Cruz works with adults, from college students to senior citizens. He provides therapy, and medication when necessary, to treat a wide variety of conditions. Dr. Cruz is happy to offer medication consultations to patients who are already in treatment with another therapist.

Dr. Cruz uses an approach that is compassionate, collaborative and patient-centered. He listens intently in order to learn about all aspects of his patients’ lives, helping to uncover issues that are contributing to their current difficulties. He then partners with clients to formulate a treatment plan tailored to each person’s unique situation. In therapy, Dr. Cruz helps patients increase their awareness of the connections between their thoughts, feelings and actions, thereby helping them avoid patterns that have been holding them back in their lives. Dr. Cruz has expertise in psychopharmacology, and in appropriate situations can thoroughly discuss medication options with patients, thereby offering another avenue to help them feel better.

Dr. Cruz earned his medical degree from Weill Medical College of Cornell University. After medical school, Dr. Cruz completed both a psychiatry residency and a public psychiatry fellowship at New York University School of Medicine, where he remains on the faculty. Prior to medical school, Dr. Cruz earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Washington, and as a social worker gained experience working in child welfare, substance abuse treatment, and HIV/AIDS case management.
