Professional statement

Chris Tickner works in-person in both Pasadena, CA and Sacramento, CA, and also online with folks all over California. He sees individuals, couples and groups, primarily adults, who might be struggling with a wide range of issues, from anxiety to trauma, from depression to low self-esteem, from premarital counseling to surviving an affair.

Most of the issues people struggle with in life stem from our childhood. Any early experience, whether good or bad, will have a huge impact on how we experience life later on. Because our brains develop from the bottom up, and the right to the left, we cannot simply rely on talk therapy to overcome any adverse experience from our childhoods. This is why the fields of psychology and neuroscience have proven the necessity to utilize body-based (somatic) and present-moment (mindfulness) approaches.

Chris has over 25 years of experience, a PhD in Somatic Psychology, and advanced training in various approaches to healing anxiety, trauma and relational issues. He specializes in trauma therapy, couples counseling, and anxiety therapy.

Message to clients

We all struggle. We're human and living in uncertain times. There should be no shame in reaching out for help. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health. Recently, we've made enormous discoveries about the brain and human psychology. We have uncovered new, powerful, and effective ways to overcome anxiety and depression, build resilience, improve our lives and relationships, and help us feel more connected and alive. I want to help you experience all of that.

Finding a therapist is a daunting task. No doubt you are already seeing that there are many options. So how do you pick? Keep in mind that the one factor that through research is most associated with successful therapy is the quality of the relationship you have with your therapist. It's more important than the their approach, training, or credentials. The relationship is the key. You want to find someone you like, someone you would have as a friend, someone who helps you feel safe and at ease. The only way to do that is to take a few potential therapists for a test ride, yes, just like buying a car!

Good luck in your search, and if there is anything I can to help out, just let me know.
