Professional statement

Eleanor McDaniel is a licensed and board certified creative arts psychotherapist, as well as a credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselor. She supports individuals facing low self-esteem, life transitions, relationship issues and general anxiety/depression. She specializes in helping people who are struggling with addictive substances and behaviors. This includes alcohol/substance misuse, as well as relational (sex and love) and process (gambling, pornography, shopping, food, internet) addictions. She helps to maneuver all phases of recovery, from curiosity to long term sobriety and offers alternative ways of coping with stress and uncomfortable emotions.

Many of Eleanor's clients are creative professionals such as actors, dancers, musicians and artists, who are examining how their personal and professional lives relate to their creativity. Creative blockage can often be a byproduct of depression and anxiety, so talk therapy can be especially helpful in exploring underlying emotions and limiting beliefs. If clients are interested Eleanor integrates art therapy into sessions as a way to relax and express feelings that are difficult to talk about.

Before opening her private practice, Eleanor began her career running cognitive behavioral and art therapy groups on Rikers Island Correctional Facility and spent many years as a counselor at an outpatient substance abuse treatment program in Brooklyn. Due to her wide areas of experience Eleanor is able to incorporate many styles of therapy into sessions based on each individual's experience. These forms of therapy can include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Mindfulness and Creative Arts Therapy.

Currently Eleanor is seeing clients remotely through video and phone calls. She is usually based out of her office in Williamsburg, Brooklyn steps away from the Bedford Ave subway station.
