Professional statement

Mara Gutierrez is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker located in Washington DC. Mara is passionate about helping individuals explore their emotional pain as a way of finding a greater, more meaningful connection with themselves. Many of her clients are INFJ personality types, empaths, and highly-sensitive people who feel deeply and often try to overthink their way out of those intense emotions. She brings a multicultural and inclusive approach to helping clients get in touch with their most authentic, confident, and compassionate Self.

In sessions, Mara guides her clients to explore different parts of themselves and understand the valuable role they have played in ensuring safety and protection. She encourages clients to find insight into their minds and supplements this insight with breathwork. The breathwork sessions help clients embody the inner awareness gained during more traditional IFS therapy sessions. By paying attention to discomfort and discovering the root causes of symptoms, Mara supports clients achieve a better emotional, physical, spiritual, and relationship health.

Mara earned her Master’s degree in Social Work from Florida International University. She has additional certification in Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Breathwork Healing, and Jungian Sandtray Therapy. Her intentional, reflective approach to therapy leaves clients feeling more in-touch with their minds and bodies and empowers them to move past their emotional pain.

Message to clients

You feel a lot. You feel deeply and cycle through emotions faster than most. This intensity in feelings can also cloud your mind to the point of physical illness and emotional numbness. Our work together can help you look within and make sense of what feels like a tangled mess of emotions. Using feelings as feedback, we hold space for intense emotions and explore painful wounds, maladaptive behaviors, and limiting beliefs created by those wounds.

I don’t prescribe to tips and tricks looking to minimize or ignore our pain as I believe we can never be free from anything we desperately avoid. Instead, I strive to guide my clients to pay attention and listen to what the discomfort might be trying to tell us. I am committed to my own Self-discovery because I know the more inner work I do, the better I am at guiding others to do the same.
