Professional statement

Dr. Margarita R. Paredes is a bilingual psychologist based in Austin, Texas. She received her doctorate from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in clinical psychology with a minor in sexual abuse. She has over 20 years of experience with children, adolescents and adults. Having worked in multiple settings such as hospitals, schools, mental health centers, Dr. Paredes collaborates well with providers to provide the most effective care.

Her approach and therapeutic framework stems from her belief that relationships can heal. She combines both a systems and dynamic approach to provide services that are relevant to clients and can build on their strengths. Dr. Paredes has worked with clients who have a history of trauma and chronic pain as well as depression and anxiety. As a bilingual and bicultural therapist, she can reach and provide services to the Latinx community in a culturally sensitive manner.

Dr. Paredes's style is engaging, active, and practical. When clients first start therapy, she works on establishing a safe and comfortable environment in order to help facilitate growth and vulnerability. This approach supports clients in being able to move forward into the present and future without bringing their past trauma into their current life. Dr. Paredes provides both in-person and remote therapy sessions.

Message to clients

I value creating a safe space for others to heal. Both with children and adults, I see my role as "walking with" in the journey of life. I assess and strive to understand where the person is at and help identify together their goals for therapy. When working with children, my approach is non-directive play therapy in combination with parent-child psychotherapy. I see my work with families as a collaborative process where I partner and join the parents/caregivers to build a stronger relationship with their child or adolescent.

In working with adults who have had traumatic experiences, I begin by building a solid foundation and being curious about how they would like to grow in their lives. I offer a practical perspective in order to move through experiences that have affected their current life. Together, we determine goals and next steps so that healing can occur in a supportive and nurturing environment.

I am grateful and honored that I am able to work with clients. Being a strong advocate for children and supporting adults as they navigate life is something that I enjoy and value.
