Professional statement

Marissa Tolero (she/her) is a licensed psychotherapist and certified yoga instructor with a virtual private practice seeing clients in New York and New Jersey. She specializes in LGBTQIA+ needs, women’s experiences, shame, and self-criticism. Her work integrates her background in psychology, yoga, and meditation to offer a unique approach to therapy. She incorporates compassion-focused therapy, mindfulness, person-centered therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy into every session.

Marissa received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Social Behavior from the University of California, Irvine and her Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from the City College of New York. She obtained her 200-hour yoga teacher certification from Three Sisters Yoga and her 300-hour certification from Yoga Course. In her previous role as a therapist on a college campus in Queens, she launched a health and wellness program for LGBTQIA+ students which she presented about at two national conferences. She also helped open the campus' first LGBTQIA+ resource center and led the college's only LGBTQIA+ therapy group.

Message to clients

A safe and open environment where you don’t feel judged or ashamed is hard to find. I hope to provide you with that ease and comfort you’ve been seeking, even if just once a week in the virtual therapy room.

As a compassion-focused therapist, my primary goal is to help you develop a compassionate self while obtaining and practicing concrete skills that serve you from your day to day. Given your life experiences, these things may feel nearly impossible (sometimes even absurd!), but this is where I come in - to support and guide you in this journey to freedom, joy, rest, and peace. I offer humor and lightness and bring my full self to our sessions when appropriate so that you're not alone in being vulnerable and open in the therapy space. I can't wait to work with you :)
