Professional statement

Marissa Tolero (she/her) is a licensed psychotherapist and certified yoga instructor with a virtual private practice in New York State. She specializes in LGBTQIA+ matters, women’s obstacles, and race and identity issues. Her work entails deconstruction of white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism, and colonization as they relate to identity.

Marissa’s practice is holistic and unique in that she integrates talk therapy, yoga, and meditation into every session. She utilizes therapeutic approaches such as compassion-focused therapy, mindfulness, person-centered therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Marissa received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Social Behavior from the University of California, Irvine and her Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from the City College of New York. She obtained her 200-hour yoga teacher certification from Three Sisters Yoga and is currently in training for a 300-hour certification. In her previous role as a therapist on a college campus in Queens, she launched a health and wellness program for LGBTQIA+ students which she presented at two national conferences. She also helped open the campus' first LGBTQIA+ resource center and led the college's only LGBTQIA+ therapy group.

Message to clients

A safe space where you don’t feel judged or oppressed and where you can be your true self can be hard to find. I hope to provide you with that ease, comfort, and safety you’ve been seeking, even if just once a week in the virtual therapy room.

As part of our time together, I’ll bring yoga and meditation into your therapy experience. We’ll begin each session with a personalized yoga practice, transition to talk therapy, and close with a guided meditation. I aspire for you to feel grounded, deactivated, and safe in your body by your own creation.

As a compassion-focused therapist, my primary goal is to help you develop a compassionate self while obtaining and practicing concrete skills that serve you from your day to day. When you’ve been oppressed by society, these things may feel nearly impossible, but this is where I come in - to support and guide you in this journey to freedom, joy, rest, and peace.
