Professional statement

Melanie Bandera-Hess works with adults, couples and families in agencies and in private practice settings. She is a mother, artist, wife and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) & Certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP).

Melanie holds a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies, and a Bachelor’s degree in Acting and Theatre from Sonoma State University. She continues to engage in the arts as a professional actor and director in Colorado.

Melanie understands there is an undeniable power differential within a therapeutic interaction, and that building trust is essential. She supports her clients in determining if there is an adequate feeling of safety and connection to continue the process of building trust, through engaging in collaborative therapeutic exchanges.

With more than a decade of clinical experience, she has witnessed a multitude of defenses clients arrange to protect themselves from feared “negative emotions." Melanie successfully guides clients to drop down into what they feared to be intolerable emotions, helping them to move through without getting stuck.

Melanie utilizes intuition, expertise and artistry to riff off the language and images of her clients as she supports them in connecting the dots of their story, putting pieces of their puzzle together, and discovering patterns of behavior and modes of operating in relationships that support their freedom to live fully.

Message to clients

To live a life free from mental, emotional, and physical anguish is possible. To live an always-comfortable life is not. Ups and downs, periods of feeling low are part of the human experience.

There is full permission to be with feelings, thoughts and sensations. While many clients are facing serious challenges, therapy can be playful, and sessions can be filled with laughter and relief.

It is my joy, to guide, collaborate with and support my clients as they move into a more embodied and free way of living and inspiring to support couples in finding a path forward together.
