Professional statement

Peter Jones is a licensed couples therapist with 30 years experience in investigating and understanding impasses in communication and finding ways through and around them.

He received his MA from Columbia University and his Ed.D from the University of Bristol, both degrees focusing on how adults can help each other learn through talk. He spent 15 years teaching college and graduate students how to identify communicational processes and to design solutions through impasses.

Beginning in 2015, Peter expanded his understanding of interaction by diving into the neuroscience, attachment, and psychological literatures on communication successes and failures with intimate partners. He has been in continuous training since then with the Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (PACT) institute. He trained for five years the Hartford Family Institute's body-based (gestalt) psychotherapy program while earning his licensure in Marriage & Family Therapy.

Message to clients

You realize it's time to up your game--to do better for yourself and your partner. You want new moves and need some inspiration to figure out which ones would best support your relationship and thus your well-being.

My approach is to treat you as highly intelligent, adaptive and motivated to try out new things. I will work with you by observing how you interact and what gets in your way. It is just as easy to see this online as it is in person. How you operate in one setting is usually a fractal of how you operate in other settings.

Often you are simply doing what has always made sense to you and it doesn't work as well as you'd like. Do you really have time to dive into the research and therapy literatures that will help you do your relationship better? If so, I can help you get excited about them and point you in the right direction. But most couples prefer just to make progress quickly, and thus benefit from observation, input, feedback, practice & feedback.

I'll observe, suggest alternatives, help you use them and troubleshoot when it's hard to use them well. I'll make the rationale clear so that you can be creative with it on your own.

The goal is to function securely & thus get through difficulties fast so that you can move on to more enjoyable things.
