Professional statement

Dr. Stephanie Thrower is a licensed clinical psychologist in Massachusetts. She provides individual therapy and career counseling/coaching at the intersection of parenthood + career. Many of Dr. Thrower’s clients seek help when they are feeling lost, overwhelmed, burnt out, stuck in the distraction of perfectionism, and ready to have a more easeful, connected, and purposeful existence.

Dr. Thrower is trained in several evidence-based treatments and largely draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy. Dr. Thrower leads with validation, seeking ways to help clients experience the full range of emotions (even the tough ones) in order to approach their life more fully and according to their values. In a session, Dr. Thrower focuses therapy on the client’s short-term and long goals, all the while supporting skill development to cope with the highs and lows of life.

Dr. Stephanie Thrower is a graduate of Boston College's doctoral program in Counseling Psychology. In addition, she received her masters in Mental Health Counseling and Applied Sport Psychology. Her clinical training includes a variety of settings, primarily occurring within community and Veteran hospitals. She gained advanced training for perinatal mental health and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Dr. Thrower also has a research interest and experience training mental health providers to be more racially and culturally responsive.

Dr. Thrower hopes her clients will find her to be genuine, informed, and compassionate. She seeks to establish a therapeutic relationship where clients are comfortable providing feedback and centering their goals and needs. In addition, Dr. Thrower sees therapy as offering an invaluable opportunity to deepen an individual's understanding of who they are in the world, including making sense of how they see themselves, how the world sees them, and how to find liberation from oppression that undoubtedly harms our well-being.

Message to clients

I help individuals gain confidence and clarity in their values and purpose. Life can feel overwhelming amidst the never-ending to-do lists, the high demands of those around you, and the perfectionism sewn into every domain in your life you encounter...oh yeah and also loss and disappointment that we may avoid because we're trying to keep afloat.

Before clients reach out for therapy, they tend to think something is wrong with them. They think, "Other parents seem to have no trouble balancing their careers and having kids, why can't I?" They feel like on paper they are doing all the right things, but their anxiety and self-doubt tell them otherwise. Ultimately, building self-compassion is key to finding peace and purpose.

It takes bravery to be present with your feelings in the midst of major change and challenge. Living wholeheartedly at work and at home not out of your reach. If you want to live your life with more courage, less self-criticism, and more hope I’d love to help you get there.
