Therapists Specializing in Adoption & Foster Care in New Jersey

For many children, being placed in foster care and then adopted by a loving family results in a positive outcome. However, for some children, especially those adopted when they are older or from overseas, adjusting to a new family or foster care can be challenging. Such a significant change in circumstances represents a major life transition that can make children more vulnerable to emotional and behavioral difficulties, which can be distressing for both the child and the foster or adoptive family. While these difficulties often settle as the child adjusts to their new circumstances, some children continue to experience significant distress that affects relationships and day-to-day life.

If you are a foster or adoptive parent experiencing challenges or worrying about a child’s wellbeing, it can be helpful to seek the help of a therapist. Depending on the specific challenges you are facing, your therapist might provide family therapy, where all members of your core family unit are involved. Other providers might focus on helping the young person develop more helpful thinking patterns through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or trauma-focussed CBT (if the child is experiencing trauma symptoms). Sand tray therapy can also help children express themselves nonverbally. With the appropriate support, most children are able to adjust to life with their new families, develop supportive relationships, and live rich and fulfilling lives.

Greetings! Thank you for your interest in learning more about collaborating with me. I have provided information below, on my theoretical orientation and areas of specialization. Please feel free to message me with any questions, or schedule a 10-minute phone consultation. Sending well wishes your way!

I work together with individuals who are curious; curious about their patterns, curious about the possibility of relief, of healing, of strengthening, and of social connectedness. Life is full of overwhelming experiences that can translate to distressing levels of sadness, anxiety, anger, regret, shame, disappointment, indecision and confusion. Together, we will explore the unique features and drivers of such challenges, and in doing so, cultivate capacity for long-lasting change.

I approach my clients from a Strengths-Based lens, and use a variety of techniques informed by Polyvagal Theory and the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP). I specialize in trauma recovery, and use the technique of EMDR to address a wide variety of overwhelming life experiences.

I am keenly aware of how daunting it can be to find a new therapist. The saturation can overwhelm and leave one feeling that the right fit may be out of reach. For this reason, I offer no-cost, 10-minute phone consultations, to give you the opportunity to determine whether my style and approach best meet your needs. I look forward to hearing from you!

Sometimes even the strongest people need support to work through challenges. When you’ve come to the point where you welcome help to manage life’s stressors, therapy can feel like the most hopeful and positive time of your week.

Finding the right therapist can be uncomfortable and extremely overwhelming. I believe the most important factor in treatment is that you feel comfortable with your therapist. I welcome the opportunity to get to know you better and offer a free 15-20 minute phone consultation to see if I can be of help. If we don’t seem like the best fit, I will do my best to help you find the right therapist for you. Feel free to reach out to schedule a phone consultation, I really look forward to meeting you.
