Therapists Specializing in Adoption & Foster Care in New York

For many children, being placed in foster care and then adopted by a loving family results in a positive outcome. However, for some children, especially those adopted when they are older or from overseas, adjusting to a new family or foster care can be challenging. Such a significant change in circumstances represents a major life transition that can make children more vulnerable to emotional and behavioral difficulties, which can be distressing for both the child and the foster or adoptive family. While these difficulties often settle as the child adjusts to their new circumstances, some children continue to experience significant distress that affects relationships and day-to-day life.

If you are a foster or adoptive parent experiencing challenges or worrying about a child’s wellbeing, it can be helpful to seek the help of a therapist. Depending on the specific challenges you are facing, your therapist might provide family therapy, where all members of your core family unit are involved. Other providers might focus on helping the young person develop more helpful thinking patterns through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or trauma-focussed CBT (if the child is experiencing trauma symptoms). Sand tray therapy can also help children express themselves nonverbally. With the appropriate support, most children are able to adjust to life with their new families, develop supportive relationships, and live rich and fulfilling lives.

I take a pragmatic approach to my work. I am less interested in a particular mode or theoretical framework. I believe in using whatever that works to help you feel better. And, you get to define what makes you feel better and what you want. For some of you, that may be something unfamiliar to you, and it may take some work to figure out what you want. My job is to help you guide you there using my education, knowledge, experience and belief that you deserve and is capable of living a fulfilling life.

Sometimes even the strongest people need support to work through challenges. When you’ve come to the point where you welcome help to manage life’s stressors, therapy can feel like the most hopeful and positive time of your week.

Finding the right therapist can be uncomfortable and extremely overwhelming. I believe the most important factor in treatment is that you feel comfortable with your therapist. I welcome the opportunity to get to know you better and offer a free 15-20 minute phone consultation to see if I can be of help. If we don’t seem like the best fit, I will do my best to help you find the right therapist for you. Feel free to reach out to schedule a phone consultation, I really look forward to meeting you.

Therapeutic progress is hard to define and can seem like alchemy. I hope you find the help you need and will consider giving me a call. I treat everyone with the tools I have worked on honing for decades: respect, attention, empathy, and humor, when it's called for. Although I think in-person sessions are ideal, I will work via phone call or audio conference.

At the heart of my work is my collaboration with others to develop a valued, meaningful life. A life that is lived with integrity, curiosity, joy and meaningful relationships with others and self. There is no life without experiencing pain and loss. As we work together we learn to embrace our suffering as well as fully experience our joy and happiness.

It is my belief that the therapeutic relationship is sacred and instrumental to the healing process. As we work together I cultivate openness, curiosity, and warmth--meeting you where you are. Each individual has the potential to heal and experience freedom. My role is to support and guide this sacred process in a trusting and safe environment. As Rumi said “The wound is the place where the Light enters you”. I will be your ally as we uncover and heal your wounds and blockages, unstick repetitive patterns, set up healthy boundaries, navigate new territories, and realize one’s potential.

Between work, school, parenting, general life obligations, and now, a global pandemic, life can be stressful and overwhelming. Friends and family are all going through their own stressors, and it can be easy to feel unseen, unheard, and invalidated. You deserve a safe space to feel supported where you can speak freely, be validated, process your thoughts and trauma, and grow toward the person you want to be. Therapy is just that place, and I’m so glad you have taken the first step of your healing journey by reading this page.

As a therapist, it’s my role to support you, your child, your adolescent, or your family in healing and growing. We will work together to decide what you want to gain from therapy, and I will provide you with concrete tips and skills to help you achieve your goals. As the client, you are the expert of your own life. Each session, you will provide me with individual puzzle pieces. It is my job to help you put the pieces together to understand the larger picture; this includes your past, your present, and creating a path to attaining the future of your dreams.

One thing I tell my clients is: “You are in the driver’s seat”. You are the client and are in control at all times. Always. That may mean you choose to share only parts of your life, as you need. Or, it may mean that you literally put up your hand and say “I can’t go there today”, when asked a question, or asked to illustrate something from our discussion through Art Therapy.

Art Therapy doesn’t require any prior experience with art. It is more of an opportunity to use that part of your brain where words can’t go to express feelings. For example, through discussions and with pen and paper, one client was able to “draw a bridge” from the present moment into high school graduation and feel confident that his goals could be accomplished. Another used magazine cutouts to show goals for therapy. Each session is unique and a safe exploration (sometimes with art and sometimes with just talk) into the realm of healing, strength and successful living.

Because there are some clients who are able, my sliding scale fees can be adjusted to meet your needs. My clients are people who want to move through pain and back into living productive lives as quickly as possible. I wish that for you. Please don’t hesitate to call and discuss briefly (15 min session at no charge). I look forward to hearing from you!

Looking for a therapist, and particularly a queer and trans affirming therapist, can be a difficult and often complex process. We want someone who will understand our needs and our background, help us grow and develop new skills, and who will support us in making sense of something that remains unsettling, perhaps years after a trauma or thought pattern first emerged. As an art therapist, I work verbally with clients as well as by incorporating multimodal creative art therapy approaches. Weekly therapy can unveil new understanding about behavioral and relational patterns, trust, intimacy, creative blocks, and past trauma. Collaboratively, in a safe therapeutic relationship, we can identify goals and find more manageable ways to cope. While the focus of my practice and orientation is gender affirming and non-pathologizing with regards to queer and transgender issues, I welcome individuals of all gender identities and orientations.
