Therapists Specializing in Aging Related Concerns in New York

Although older adults can experience many of the same challenges as younger adults, the process of aging brings with it a set of unique issues that can affect our mental and physical health. It’s relatively normal to experience some changes in cognition as we age – memory loss is one example of a cognitive change that can affect an individual’s day-to-day life and impair one’s ability to regulate emotions. Relatively few older adults will experience more significant changes to their memory, thinking, and behavior that may warrant a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to cognitive changes later in life, our risk of developing health and physical problems increases as we age, and we more often must cope with the loss of friends or family. Adjusting to such losses and changes can be understandably distressing and can lead to mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, or sleep disturbance.

If you or a loved one is having difficulty adapting to the changes that come with aging, therapy can help. Seeking support from a trained therapist can help you better understand the unique challenges of aging and help with the development of coping skills and alternative perspectives. Many therapy modalities can be helpful for those dealing with aging concerns; art therapy, for instance, is an example of a modality that can be particularly helpful to those with cognitive impairments, as it does not rely on verbal communication. If you have been diagnosed with a neurological condition, such as dementia, you may benefit from seeking more specialized care from a clinician specifically trained in this area.

I'm a caring and direct psychologist with a speciality in sleep disorders. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) to help you to get the sleep your body needs. CBT-I is a rapid and effective treatment. In fact, 85% of CBT-I clients will increase their sleep by at least 1 hour with as little as 4-8 sessions. Stop letting your worries or your medications dictate your sleep. Let's work together so you can reclaim ownership of your sleep.

I also offer treatments for the issues underlying sleep disturbance including depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction and other mind/body health challenges. I use compassion and support to help you understand your problems, and I provide concrete coping skills and evidence based tools to help you manage these problems outside of sessions.

Schooled in both Eastern and Western psychology, I bring a contemplative, fluid perspective to the exploration of the human mind and the alleviation of suffering. Using a psychoanalytic, interpersonal approach, I enjoy working at the edges of deep experience – in the openness between awareness and dissociation, past and present, individuation and interrelatedness – to help my clients increase their capacity to tolerate ambiguity and ambivalence, to make meaning from experience, and to expand their understanding of self. Together we find pathways that lead beyond old limitations and engraved patterns of being towards a life of greater freedom and ease.
I am strong but gentle, and able to comfortably contain a high degree of distress.

I strive to create an environment which feels safe and where we are able to understand, relieve and try to improve what is troubling you. Sometimes that means sharing feelings of sorrow, fear, shame, loss or anguish; sometimes it is more thinking aloud and determining a more productive course of action. We will work together so that you feel less alone, more understood and supported in whatever may be troubling you.

My faith in the therapeutic process is founded in the belief that we each have the ability to access more of what can provide comfort and clarity in our lives. Intention, curiosity and a devotion to a greater happiness are the basic tools needed to kindle profound change. Experiencing 'stuck-ness,' repetitive negative patterns, self-doubt, loss and fear can make common obstacles seem insurmountable, and cloud the path to our hopes for the future. With a non-judgmental and alert presence, the vague often becomes lucid, and confusion can give way to acceptance and understanding—with ourselves and towards others.
My interest is in simplicity of being, and in cultivating what we do that is of service, while looking with a spirit of inquiry at whatʼs not working. What is the relationship of form to function in our lives, and how can we manifest a more purposeful design? It is my most sincere hope that I can aid in supporting a natural awareness that is the key to living a fulfilled expression of our own authenticity, integrity and joy.
I specialize in life transitions, relationships, loss, identity, sexuality, creativity, fear, anxiety, spirituality and existential isolation. My work is with couples and individuals, with the collaborative goal of helping you find more effective ways to be happy, and tapping your existing resources to weather the ever-shifting currents of life.

I care deeply about my patients. After each session I reflect upon the patient's needs, including but not limited to care coordination with other health care providers. Your mental health is a direct reflection of your physical health and should be treated with the same reverence. This is why I apply my understanding of the interdisciplinary health care system to ensure all aspects of the patient's health are treated appropriately.

I am empathetic and a good listener, while also practical and a problem solver. My support and availability extends beyond the allotted session, and I go above and beyond to be there for my patients.

Whatever it is that you’re struggling with, I would encourage you to reach out. We can all use extra support, especially today during these unpredictable times. I would be happy to hear from you and see how I can help.

It is my priority to be present with sensitivity, empathy, and respect for who you are.

One thing I tell my clients is: “You are in the driver’s seat”. You are the client and are in control at all times. Always. That may mean you choose to share only parts of your life, as you need. Or, it may mean that you literally put up your hand and say “I can’t go there today”, when asked a question, or asked to illustrate something from our discussion through Art Therapy.

Art Therapy doesn’t require any prior experience with art. It is more of an opportunity to use that part of your brain where words can’t go to express feelings. For example, through discussions and with pen and paper, one client was able to “draw a bridge” from the present moment into high school graduation and feel confident that his goals could be accomplished. Another used magazine cutouts to show goals for therapy. Each session is unique and a safe exploration (sometimes with art and sometimes with just talk) into the realm of healing, strength and successful living.

Because there are some clients who are able, my sliding scale fees can be adjusted to meet your needs. My clients are people who want to move through pain and back into living productive lives as quickly as possible. I wish that for you. Please don’t hesitate to call and discuss briefly (15 min session at no charge). I look forward to hearing from you!
