Therapists Specializing in Body Dysmorphia in Rhode Island

It’s common to occasionally feel concerned about aspects of our appearance, regardless of age, sex, or gender identity. For some people, however, this worry is of the severity that calls for the diagnosis of “body dysmorphic disorder,” a mental health condition marked by a preoccupation with perceived defects in appearance and compulsive behaviors or routines that function as an attempt to help deal with the anxiety. For many people, body dysmorphia is distressing and interferes with relationships and daily life.

The trained therapists below can help with any type of concern about appearance that interferes with your wellbeing. The aim of therapy is to better understand body dysmorphia, develop more helpful appearance-related thoughts and beliefs, and reduce unhelpful compulsive behaviors. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a component of exposure and response prevention (ERP) is one of the most common treatment approaches for body dysmorphia.

So many people feel alone in their struggles, as well as disconnected from friends, family, and self. Seeking support is a brave step that signifies the desire for change, fulfillment and/or connection. Building a relationship with a therapist who is a good match for you and experiencing good therapy will be life changing. It is so important to find a therapist that you respect and connect well with, someone who can bring care and comfort to your most vulnerable parts.
Message to clients with an eating disorder: Struggling with an eating disorder can be such a lonely and isolating experience. Feelings are often internalized and it feels foreign or too scary to externalize them in a state of pure vulnerability. The eating disorder behaviors are helpful to numb self and distract from the current emotions and/or present stressors in your life. Although CBT and DBT skills can be helpful tools to help restructure distorted thinking, regulate emotions and improve distress, I find that it does not shift behaviors. This result leaves people feeling hopeless and frustrated. I feel passionate that the work I do with my clients not only improves symptoms, but is also transformative in the way they relate to family, friends and self.

Working together, we use a combination of psychotherapeutic approaches to understand causes and contributors and plot a course of action. The process of therapy of therapy typically involves helping clients get in better touch with their feelings and values. Over the course of our work together you can expect to move from a problem solving mode to one of deepening self knowledge and expanding potential. Modern life pulls us in many directions and at times we can feel off balance. It is at these times that self doubt and isolation can increase and our thoughts, moods and behaviors become difficult to understand and regulate.
If you or your child is struggling, let's start with a conversation. I am a reliable, responsible and accessible physician who can augment the work you are currently doing with a therapist with medication, or streamline your treatment with one appointment that will provide both services.
Working together, you can expect an individual tailored treatment plan that is evidence based and rooted in both biological and psychological sciences. I will provide a comfortable space where you can feel safe and vulnerable to talk about all the things that are important to you.

I'm excited to both work with people who have very specific sexuality related goals that they would like support around, and to do general mental health counseling with people who do not want to educate their therapist about a specific part of their sexual and/or gender identity. I work to create a space where people can show up as their full and complicated selves and trust that they will be genuinely cared about. I have specific training around gender diversity including trans and non-binary identities.

As a relational therapist it is central to my work that I develop authentic and healing therapeutic relationships with my clients where they know they are unconditionally cared about, and where they can do challenging and vulnerable relational work in a boundaried and structured environment.

Our therapy program is based in a sex positive philosophy that frames a wide diversity of identities, desires, and sexual behaviors as healthy and normal. We center social justice, personal autonomy, and consent as our guiding values. If this sounds like support that meets your unique self and needs - I'm excited to work with you.

I view therapy as a collaborative process. Much like an editor for a writer, a coach for an athlete, or a director for an actor, I respect that you bring your knowledge of yourself and I bring knowledge from years of listening and assisting others. I aim to create a private and safe place to sort through dilemmas, struggles, challenging feelings and experiences.
