Therapists Specializing in Substance Abuse in New York

Substance abuse is a mental health concern that involves the harmful use of alcohol, drugs, or other substances. Any substance use that raises concern, leads to impairments in daily functioning, or causes distress is important to discuss with a professional. Specialized and knowledgeable therapeutic care can help both the individual experiencing addiction or navigating recovery, as well as their family and loved ones.

The following therapists can help individuals understand the role of substances in their life and lessen their impact. Treatment approaches vary, but therapists with expertise in this area may use harm reduction or motivational interviewing techniques to help clients build momentum and commitment toward behavior change. Other therapists might bring specific expertise in other efficacious modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or family behavior therapy (FBT).

When we feel overwhelmed by our sadness, worry, and anger we often don't know how to cope. We might yell when we don't mean to or lack the confidence we need to succeed at work. We worry too much, think too fast or find it hard to motivate ourselves. Shame and guilt prevent us from thriving the way we deserve and so we ruminate on the past and can't imagine the future. I believe our ability to manage our feelings is deeply connected to our relationships with others and talking with a psychologist who is understanding, insightful, and compassionate can help us improve those relationships, handle our emotions, and feel better.

An important part of finding the right therapist is finding someone who ‘gets you.’ Someone who is open-minded, nonjudgmental and curious to learn more about what is important to you while collaborating with you on making helpful changes.

I'm a caring and direct psychologist with a speciality in sleep disorders. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) to help you to get the sleep your body needs. CBT-I is a rapid and effective treatment. In fact, 85% of CBT-I clients will increase their sleep by at least 1 hour with as little as 4-8 sessions. Stop letting your worries or your medications dictate your sleep. Let's work together so you can reclaim ownership of your sleep.

I also offer treatments for the issues underlying sleep disturbance including depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction and other mind/body health challenges. I use compassion and support to help you understand your problems, and I provide concrete coping skills and evidence based tools to help you manage these problems outside of sessions.

I have been a therapist working with couples and individuals for more than twenty-five years. During that time I have found it is important to balance understanding a couple as a whole and the two individuals which make up the relationship. I help a couple focus on ineffective and dysfunctional communication patterns that result in a sense of frustration and discouragement. I encourage each person to express their emotional needs more directly and openly. People often express their anger and criticism about their partner's behavior, but have difficulty asking for what they need in a clear, non-attacking way. When people can express their underlying needs for support and understanding, and the insecurities and vulnerable feelings they usually hide, their partners then are more likely to respond in a positive, affirming way.

This approach helps couples develop constructive problem resolution skills. People become able to assert themselves more comfortably, while understanding and appreciating their partner's perspective. Couples often find they learn new things about their partner’s personality even when they have been together a long time.

In individual therapy I also help people focus on patterns in their significant relationships that result in feelings of frustration, distance, and sadness. Most  people come into therapy because they are experiencing emotionally painful feelings such as anxiety, depression, and anger which they are having difficulty managing. They know what hurts, but they may not be aware of the meanings that they give to certain situations. It is the meaning that we assign to a situation that causes pain, more than a specific action or behavior that someone does to us. Understanding our experience and motivations more clearly, helps us communicate our needs more directly to the important people in our lives. This both decreases our pain and increases a sense of connection to others. Before we can communicate more clearly with others, we have to be able to identify and formulate our experience clearly to ourselves. This leads to increased self-esteem and self-acceptance.

My goal is to provide an environment that makes you feel safe and enables you to express yourself openly about anything that you need to talk about. It is so important to have at least one person in your life that you can talk to without being "on" or having to worry about what you say. I will strive to understand you and to help you understand yourself.
I am here to listen and support you through whatever you are going through and to work with you to see aspects of the situation that you may not be fully aware of. We will work on understanding your unique challenges and developing your hidden strengths. We all get stuck in patterns of behavior that could use some revision. We will work on your becoming conscious of the motivations behind your behaviors and determine healthier ways of meeting the needs that the behaviors are satisfying in the moment that get in the way of who you really are and what you truly want.
