Therapists Providing Multicultural Therapy in Rhode Island

Multicultural therapy considers the role cultural, ethnic, and racial identities have in the unique experience of the client and the therapeutic process of healing. A multicultural therapist brings a diverse cultural knowledge and curiosity as well as a sensitivity to the history of oppression and the politics of power. I acknowledge how difficult it is to make to the decision to come to therapy. Seeking support for emotional or personal challenges is an act to bravery. I realize how stigmatized strong emotions are in our society, and at times we may feel shame for crying. In my practice I aim to serve as a platform free of judgement that allows you to speak your deepest pain and discomfort. To support you in establishing a channel of communication between your body and your mind.

Therapy is an invitation to a different kind of relationship – it is all at once open and vulnerable while also reliable and purposeful. Of course, like any relationship worthwhile, it comes with its own set of challenges: Do we “click?” Are you learning something about yourself and the world around you through this time (both during and after a session)? Are we comfortable providing each other feedback? Are we doing the work of healing?

It is as much about what the therapist can offer and the ways in which they can validate your truth as it is what you would like to and are ready to bring to the table at your own pace.

As such, I see myself as the facilitator of this bold, empowering process – you take ownership of your decisions, including the positive ones that showcase your inherent power to engage in life in the best way possible for you.

When navigating life challenges and changes, we can all benefit from the support, structure and accountability of a skilled compassionate companion. As your compassionate companion, I will join you in this journey of exploration and learning. We will work together to bravely and kindly learn more about you and the patterns supporting or inhibiting your growth, explore what is possible for you, and help you move in a direction that feels fulfilling for you.

The change point at the heart of crisis often leads someone to consider therapy and though it may be difficult to see the opportunity for healing and change, seeking help is a first step toward new possibilities.

I am dedicated to building a deep relationship with you and provide an open and safe space for you to explore all your concerns, to cultivate resilience and find solutions. Through the process of self discovery many find greater equanimity, purpose, compassion and an expanded capacity for love.

Psychotherapy is a process by which progress and healing involves a deep commitment to yourself, the courage to face your challenges, and the belief that change is possible. Taking that first step is often the most difficult one, whether you're trying out therapy for the first time or have decided to return. My approach is collaborative and I aim to ensure a safe, private and inviting space where, together, we can sort through and make sense of your struggles and use these insights as a stage for change and transformation.

Thanks for exploring my Zencare page to see if I may be the right fit to support you on your journey toward improving relationships, expanding your toolbox of healthy coping skills, making meaning of these challenging times in our world (e.g., COVID, racism, social injustice), and feeling better in your daily life!

Since I am actively licensed to support clients living in Rhode Island, I am unable to serve those living in Connecticut/Massachusetts/other states. As I am not a Trauma Specialist, I encourage individuals seeking trauma-focused support to reach out to an EMDR certified Zencare Trauma Specialist. As I typically offer one to two monthly visits, treatment of Substance Dependence, Severe Depression/Bipolar Conditions, and Anorexia/Bulimia also typically fall beyond my scope of care for ongoing client support.

Potential future clients often reach out when they tried therapy before, yet found the match was not the right fit (e.g., being charged when you need to cancel for something important in your life, hearing "uh-huh" without gaining insight/coping skills). I believe flexibility, cultural awareness/competency, and connection is essential for healing! -Dr. Chantelle

My absolute love is helping sensitive LGBTQIA+ introverts who have been pushed to the margins discover their voice.

Maybe you’re deeply empathetic, you’ve been told you’re too sensitive, an over-thinker, take things too personally, too quiet, too withdrawn, too much, too... something! Roughly 15-20% of the population has a level of sensory processing sensitivity and about 25-40% of the population are introverts. If you suspect this describes you, you’re in good company.

I think us sensitive introverts have unique needs, ways to tend to ourselves, and types of emotional nourishment that are under-appreciated in the dominant culture. And when we’re navigating a life that involves various intersections, things can be really difficult, even overwhelming.

It’s very important to me that the therapy space honors all pieces of your identity. I offer a judgement-free zone for those interested in exploring and navigating topics related to power, privilege, oppression, and marginalization (e.g., white supremacy, transnegativity, homophobia, sexism, ableism, etc.). In the spirit of full transparency, I believe that as a human who embodies a number of structural privileges, my anti-racist and anti-oppressive learning is never finished, which is humbling.

My goal is to offer you the highest quality holistic counseling that I can, so any gains you make in therapy will last the rest of your life. And I always emphasize that no matter who you are or where you come from, your story is honored here.

One thing that I hold most dear is to try to relate to individuals in a humanistic and relational way, to make clients feel safe, comfortable, and supported, while also incorporating humor into our work.
