Practice Information

The Pediatric Anxiety Research Center (PARC) and our Intensive Program for OCD and Anxiety Disorders provides high quality, evidence-based, family-centered treatment for children ages 5 to 18 years who have primary concerns involving obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety, panic, social anxiety, school anxiety, specific phobias, separation anxiety, and selective mutism). PARC was founded in 1999 and is a nationally-recognized center of excellence that continually strives to integrate state of the art clinical care and innovative research in a culturally responsive manner. We have a long history of patient-centered research and community partnerships through which we continue to strive to be as responsive as we can to the needs of all children with anxiety disorders and OCD.

Our compassionate, friendly, and highly-skilled team of exposure coaches, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses are experts in working with youth and families in learning how to "live the exposure lifestyle" and reclaim their lives from anxiety and/or OCD. You can learn more about all of us at PARC on our website (just Google "PARC anxiety" to find it).

FAQS

What services does your practice offer?

We have intensive morning and afterschool programs, both of which provide in-person, daily treatment Monday through Friday for 4-6 hours per day, with children continuing to live at home with their families. Services also include home/community visits and family coaching. Exposure-based individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and medication management (when indicated) are provided across a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary treatment team. Children who are struggling to attend school consistently, avoiding preferred activities or important relationships due to anxious distress, needing a high level of family support to get through the day due to anxiety/OCD, and/or having other difficulties functioning are often well served with partial hospital level of care to start, then can step down to outpatient.

What are your practice's specialties?

Our program utilizes the most effective form of therapy there is for anxiety and OCD - exposure therapy - which involves us collaborating with youth and families to design and perform tasks that bring up the distress that they've been avoiding and then coaching and supporting them through learning how to tolerate this distress as it naturally comes down over time - a process called habituation. When we can face the things that scare us, we learn one of two things: it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be OR it was as bad as we thought and we could get through it. Either way, youth and families build their bravery muscles and their capacity and confidence to face hard things and build the lives they want to live.

How does payment work at your practice?

We are based at Bradley Hospital, which accepts nearly all Rhode Island insurance plans and many regional out of state plans, making us accessible to nearly all families. We can also sometimes obtain single case agreements with out-of-network plans. Families are responsible for any deductibles or co-pays that may apply both in-network and out-of-network. Our patient registration team works with you to determine this amount in advance of admission.
