Professional statement

Carolina Biernacki, M.D. is a child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist based in the Flatiron district in New York City. She sees patients of all ages, most of whom are struggling with mood disorders such as depression, postpartum depression, bipolar disorder; anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, OCD; trauma or loss; ADHD; adjustment difficulties; family, social, professional or relationship stress; and/or overall difficulty functioning. Dr Biernacki's aim is always to work collaboratively with a patient to get a thorough understanding of their symptoms and situation in order to offer a treatment plan that aligns with a patient's needs, wants and expectations.

Dr. Biernacki's approach is patient-centered, culturally-sensitive and comprehensive, taking into account a client's lifestyle, origins, wellness habits and personal preference in addition to their medical and psychiatric history. Dr. Biernacki always provides evidence-based treatment approaches with typical treatment consisting of psychotherapy (see list for various options depending on indication/preference), medication management or both, as well as discussions around optimizing lifestyle and overall wellness.

Dr. Biernacki started as an internist but quickly switched to psychiatry as she found that mental health was an underestimated component of overall health. After completing training in child and adolescent psychiatry at NYPH/Columbia/Cornell, she worked in medically underserved areas and non-profit clinics serving incredibly varied patient populations. She has provided guidance in establishing mental health programs for agencies such as IMG models; has lectured at the Child Mind Institute and professional conferences; and has published 2 chapters in the esteemed psychiatric book A Guide to Treatments That Works, 4th Edition from Oxford Press which reviews the latest research on psychiatric medication and psychosocial treatments. It is with this breadth and depth of experience that Dr. Biernacki approaches each patient to optimize healing and well being.

Message to clients

Despite increased mental health awareness over the years, I know that it can still be difficult to take the steps to seek treatment, let alone show up at a stranger's office and discuss deeply personal issues. I want every client to know that I understand what a challenge this can be, and how important it is for you to feel at ease and truly heard. I work with clients to make the process as smooth as possible and offer both in person and virtual visits as a means to ensure flexible access as well.

I think of mental health as the cornerstone of overall health and therefore aim to work on resiliency and optimizing mental wellness as opposed to simply addressing symptoms. While I provide psychotherapy to most of my patients, I do see many for medication management only and collaborate with external therapists. For children and adolescent patients, I work with school counsellors and teachers - in addition to parents, of course - and can refer for neuropsych testing or review IEPs. I also have a referral network for DBT, group treatments, TMS and ketamine.
