Professional statement

Dr. Howe is a psychiatrist in Brookline, MA with expertise in anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, sleep-related issues, trauma, and substance use disorders. He received his MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and completed both his adult psychiatry residency and addiction psychiatry fellowship at Harvard Medical School programs. In addition to his private practice, he is a staff physician at Brandeis University's student Counseling Center.

In his Brookline practice, Dr. Howe provides talk therapy for all his clients, and is dedicated to creating a positive therapeutic relationship with his clients so that they can work within a nonjudgmental and productive space. For those who have conditions that could improve with medication treatment, he offers the convenience of both therapy and medications. He values the part that talk therapy plays in treatment, and prioritizes a balance between therapy and medications in reaching clients' personal goals. While Dr. Howe is double board-certified in adult and addiction psychiatry, the focus of his Brookline practice is therapy.

Message to clients

The decision to enter psychotherapy is often a deeply personal one, and even taking steps toward it can require a great deal of insight and strength. Choosing a therapist is an important part of the process, as research has consistently shown that the therapeutic relationship between patient and therapist is the most important predictor of positive outcomes.
I consider it a privilege to facilitate patients’ realization of their therapeutic goals using evidence-based treatments. In my Brookline practice, I provide my patients with a comfortable and empathic environment in which to engage in therapy. Many benefit from psychotherapy alone. When indicated, I offer integrated psychotherapy and medication treatment. Together, we determine the best treatment plan for you.
