Professional statement

Dr. Kathryn Fleming-Ives is a psychiatrist based in Providence, RI. She works with adults over 18 years old. Kathryn's practice is a psychotherapy based practice meaning that she sees patients for psychotherapy alone or for psychotherapy with medication evaluation and management.

While Kathryn is a psychiatrist and believes in the importance of medications when needed, she also identifies as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. This means she believes that unconscious processes can affect how one consciously thinks, feels and behaves and to become aware of these processes can be helpful; becoming aware can free us from pain and allow us to live more fulfulling lives. In addition to psychoanalytic psychotherapy, Kathryn also has training in IPT (Interpersonal Psychotherapy) , CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) as well as a speciality in attachment. She will use whatever tools that she thinks will be most helpful to her patients while maintaining the importance of the therapeutic relationship as fundamental to healing.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Fleming-Ives also teaches psychotherapy to psychiatry residents (doctors who are in their speciality training). Her office is located on Hope Street.

Message to clients

I aim to create a therapeutic space for you to feel safe, heard, understood and cared for and about. In this kind of space, I believe amazing things can happen. We will work at the pace that you need to achieve goals that are important to you. You may already know that you need medication for something you are struggling with or you may be wondering if medication is right for you. Together, we will sort this out.

We will work with the content of the problems you are bringing in to our work. In addition, I will be interested in the process of our work together. This means, I will be interested in your responses to my input and recommendations. If it feels relevant and important to you, I will also be interested in how aspects of your past including your childhood are affecting you now. Together, we will sort through the past to create an understanding of it as well as change patterns that may no longer be helping you.
