Professional statement

Adrian Matthews (he/him or they/them) is a therapist in Providence, Rhode Island with a practice focused on supporting people who are in—or interested in—consensually non-monogamous relationships. Whether clients are considering opening a currently monogamous relationship, have been practicing some form of consensual non-monogamy for years, are not currently in any romantic or sexual relationships, or are experiencing serious doubts about whether the possibilities—and challenges—that consensual non-monogamy presents are really what they want in the long-run, clients can benefit from making intentional choices about how their relationships are structured. Adrian Matthews Counseling offers individual therapy, as well as relationship counseling that can include two or more partners, or a constellation of relationships.

Adrian’s previous work includes providing in-home therapy for children/adolescents and their families, with a focus on helping families make changes that supported each family member’s health and relationships. Adrian’s experience also includes individual outpatient therapy working with individuals who have experienced trauma, and helping clients understand those experiences—such as sexual violence, emotionally or physically abusive intimate relationships, or experiencing or witnessing abuse or neglect in childhood—and how those experiences impact their lives and relationships in the present.

Adrian Matthews Counseling is based in Providence, Rhode Island. Adrian is licensed in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, offering telehealth services to people located in either state.

Message to clients

Although the work I do in therapy ends up going in many different directions, the starting point is the same: I believe that when individuals are empowered to make intentional, informed choices about their relationships—choices that reflect their own values, needs, and desires rather than someone else’s—their relationships will be more stable, more satisfying, more sustainable. I want every person I work with to develop: a) insight into which aspects of their relationships have been built around assumptions that may not actually be true or helpful for them, b) clarity about what their values, needs, and desires actually are, and c) skills that will help them translate that insight and clarity into actions that will make all of their relationships—not just their sexual or romantic relationships—more fulfilling and rewarding.

I trust my clients. I trust that they have an intuitive understanding of what kinds of relationships will meet their needs, and that they often just need support in putting that understanding into action; ultimately, my work is about helping my clients have that same trust in themselves. If you'd like support in that process, I want to help. Reach out today to get started.
