Professional statement

Al Hoberman is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist and Board Certified Music Therapist located in New York, NY. He works with young adults and adults who face challenges with depression, anxiety, grief, and substance abuse. Many of his clients have previously gone through traumatic events or relationships, which might have impacted their ability to develop a self-identity or to cope with change in their lives, including in their relationships.

Al’s approach to therapy centers around self-acceptance and self-care. As a music therapist and creative arts therapist, Al leverages individuals’ innate sense of creativity to give them ways to express emotion. This is particularly helpful for those who feel that they cannot verbalize their thoughts or feelings, and those who struggle to understand their inner worlds. By increasing self-awareness and providing a safe space to process through difficult emotions, Al supports clients to heal and grow through conversation, music, and art. He also incorporates mindfulness into his sessions, teaching clients tools they can use in their everyday lives.

Al earned a Master’s degree from New York University. He has certificates from The Music Psychotherapy Center and the Institute for Music and Consciousness. Throughout Al’s ten years working in the mental health space, he’s helped countless individuals to find a sense of peace in their emotions and to express themselves in creative ways.

Message to clients

Hi! I'm Al. I believe that therapy is more about feeling than understanding, more about experiencing something new than about filling out worksheets and following a set procedure. As a therapist, I see my role as your creative partner, joining you on the amazing artistic endeavor that is creating the life you want to live. Together we'll unpack the materials - all the experiences, skills, knowledge, and beliefs that make you who you are - and begin to discover new ways of putting them together that makes space for ALL of the parts of you to work together in harmony.

People come to work with me because they feel stuck, shut down, or out of place in their lives, and want to feel like they can show up authentically in their lives without judgement or rejection. Many of my clients feel like the role that life has handed them just isn't working out the way they had hoped - or were promised. Others are navigating new roles thrust upon them by big changes in their lives, sometimes expected, sometimes not.

If any of that sounds like you, let's talk! I'd be honored to start this project of growth with you.
