Professional statement

Dr. Brian Bermack is a psychologist in Arlington, MA. Dr. Bermack is passionate about helping his clients figure out the root cause of their sadness, anxiety, excessive worry, lack of energy, unhealthy habits, or emotional reactions to major life transitions. He emphasizes the importance of self-empowerment in all of his sessions, supporting his clients as they determine their own desires and next steps when it comes to mental health.

In a session with Dr. Bermack, he might ask the client to consider the rationality of his or her thoughts. This is a therapeutic technique that comes from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a well-researched style that draws on the connection between thought, emotion, and behavior. Alongside CBT, Dr. Bermack utilizes relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and hypnosis. His style creates a safe therapeutic atmosphere within which a client feels comfortable exploring past and present thoughts to learn more about their emotional reactions.

Before becoming a psychologist, Dr. Bermack worked in the information technology field - because of this background, he enjoys working with those who have an affinity for science, technology, math, or engineering, as well as individuals who see themselves as shy or introverted. Dr. Bermack studied Clinical Psychology at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (now William James College), where he earned his PsyD.

Message to clients

I know it's not easy to make the decision to see a therapist. I don't know yet what difficult things are going on in your life right now, but there's probably more than it feels like you can manage. That's why you're here - and the last thing I would want to do is to add to that burden. As a therapist, I do my best to make you feel safe and comfortable working with me from the very first time we talk - but I also know that it may take some time for you to trust me enough to tell me everything you want me to know, or to be ready to hear any suggestions I might have for you. That's fine. We'll go at your pace, whether you're ready to dive right into your biggest challenges today, or take some time to decide whether I'm the person you trust to help you.

If you do decide to trust me, there are many different ways I might be able to help you. You may be looking for specific suggestions to help you cope with specific problems, like insomnia or anxiety attacks or conflicts with co-workers. I can probably offer some. Or you may feel the need to have someone you can share your feelings with, who won't judge you or shame you or tell you what to do. I can be that person. You may not really know what you need yet - you might just know that you're not living the life you want to live, but not really know why or what will help. I can help you sort through what your goals are, what's getting in your way, and what can help you achieve them. For some people, a few sessions of therapy is all they need to learn some new skills that help get them past a challenge. For others, therapy may be an ongoing source of valuable support for many years. But we'll take it one session at a time. The first step is reaching out and setting up an appointment. I look forward to getting to know you and finding out how I can help you.
