Professional statement

Since opening her private practice in 2011, Jessica Kaplan, LICSW has dedicated her career to helping children, adolescents, young adults and their families cope more effectively with anxiety. Given the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, she began working with clients via telehealth and found that it worked so well with her young adult population that she is now working remotely for the foreseeable future and exclusively with clients ages 18-35. Ms. Kaplan treats individuals struggling to cope with symptoms of generalized anxiety, social anxiety, specific phobias and mild/moderate OCD. She is an expert in her field and takes a flexible approach to ensure each individual’s goals are being met. Her ultimate hope is for her client’s to feel more in control of their anxious tendencies. Given her telehealth-only approach to therapy, not all prospective clients will be best supported within this model. Those struggling with moderate to severe depression and/or recent thoughts to harm themselves and/or others will be encouraged to find in-person support services.

Jessica earned her masters degree in social work from Simmons University. Upon graduation she was employed as a therapist with a local residential treatment center for adolescents, as well as for the Bradley Hasbro Children’s Research Center where she was stationed within the Family Court Mental Health Clinic. Within this mental health clinic specifically, Ms. Kaplan not only provided court ordered evaluations for adolescents, but was also formally trained in providing cognitive behavioral therapy to youth taking part in a research study named Project ITP. Jessica also has experience co-leading group therapies and particularly enjoyed running groups on healthy dating relationships for female teenagers taking part in a research study named DateSmart.

Message to clients

I am particularly interested in working with female college students and post graduate folks in their 20’s and 30’s. I enjoy supporting these individuals while they try to establish and maintain balance in their lives whether it be regarding school, work, or nurturing close relationships.

My clients tend to struggle with perfectionistic tendencies, a fear of failure or not being good enough, quieting their mind from racing thoughts, and managing the physical symptoms of panic and anxiety. I use a cognitive behavioral approach which means that we are looking at the connection between your thoughts, feelings and behavior, determining which thoughts are helpful and accurate, and then putting things into perspective in such a way that allows for meaningful behavioral change and more emotional stability. Other therapeutic techniques, i.e. mindfulness practices and exposure response prevention may be used as clinically indicated.

You can expect an active therapist who is both a compassionate and empathetic listener, and also someone who can provide valuable, evidenced based skills (this means that they are backed by research and science!) for managing worry and stress. You’ll learn how to reassure yourself that you CAN tolerate the exhausting, annoying effects of anxiety/panic on the body and mind. You’ll learn that you are capable or more than you think, and that when you begin to set more realistic (not perfectionistic) expectations of yourself and others the more productive you will be, and the more fulfilling your relationships will feel; most notably your relationship with yourself.
