Professional statement

Dr. Joy Heafner is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in couples therapy. She is passionate about helping couples create highly functional relationships defined by respect, admiration, and happiness.

Joy's approach combines two evidence-based treatments for couples: Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method. She offers clients tools to communicate effectively and manage conflicts, while also getting to the bottom of why conflict is happening in the first place. Her style is direct, nonjudgmental, and empathic. After working with Joy, clients feel more connected with each other and more confident that they have the skills to handle problems as they arise.

Joy’s goal is to ensure that her clients see real progress. She takes a feedback-informed approach, meaning she regularly asks you how the therapy is going, what is working, and what could be better. Just like in the relationships she treats, Joy believes that if something isn’t working in the therapy process, then it’s important to talk about it and make adjustments accordingly.

Joy conducts therapy online anywhere in Rhode Island or Connecticut. She strives to create an environment that is safe and welcoming for folks of any gender, sexual orientation, and relationship style.

Message to clients

You truly care about your partner, but you’re starting to wonder how long you can keep going like this. You’ve had yet another day of the same old issues. You’re overwhelmed, irritated, and tired of walking on eggshells. It might be hard to admit, but thoughts about leaving your partner are starting to creep in - and you wonder if they are feeling the same way.

I can help. I love helping people create warm and fulfilling relationships, so I’ve devoted my entire practice to working with couples. I have an uncanny knack for seeing many sides of a problem, slowing down the emotional turmoil, and honing in on the heart of the matter in a caring and thoughtful way. I cut through the conflict so that you and your partner can connect in an intimate and real way. No more talking in circles or stony silences.

What would it feel like to go through hard things with your partner without all the confusion, frustration, and defensiveness? Can you imagine being able to have a conversation in which you feel truly heard and respected?

If you’re ready to go from a just-okay relationship to one filled with warmth and teamwork, then schedule a free consultation with me. Let’s discuss what you’re looking for in your relationship and how I can help you find it.
