Professional statement

Laura Rothkopf is a licensed clinical social worker providing individual and couple psychotherapy for adults in New York. People come to her carrying all sorts of challenges...worry, overwhelm, relationship difficulties, an unnamable sense that something is off. She works with her clients toward a deeper understanding of themselves and greater freedom in how they live.

Laura's approach is grounded in psychodynamic and relational theory, attending to patterns that shape how we experience ourselves, our emotions, and our relationships over time. By paying close attention to what arises in session, she and her clients work to understand these patterns rather than feel governed by them. She also draws from somatic and integrative approaches, and attends to existential themes — questions of meaning, loss, freedom, and how to live — as they emerge.

For couples, Laura integrates Gottman Method Couples Therapy with her psychodynamic framework, attending to both the concrete patterns and communication dynamics that organize a couple's difficulties, and the deeper histories each partner brings to the relationship.

Before becoming a therapist, Laura spent nearly a decade in media and corporate environments, an experience that informs her understanding of the pressures many of her clients carry. She completed postgraduate training in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and an advanced clinical practice program at NYU Silver School of Social Work, where she also received her MSW. Her training in philosophy at Barnard College and as a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford informs her interest in how people make meaning of their experiences.

Laura offers virtual sessions for individuals and couples in New York State. She is a private-pay provider and can provide monthly superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. She also reserves a limited number of sliding scale spots; feel free to ask if the full fee is a barrier.

Message to clients

Therapy is one of the strangest and most meaningful things you can do for yourself. You sit with someone who begins as a stranger and share things you may never have said out loud. And, when the fit is right, things begin to shift, because being genuinely known by another person is powerful...and increasingly rare.

The people I work best with are curious about themselves and how they experience others and the world around them. They're often hurting or feeling stuck, yet they make the profound choice to show up anyway, and that means a lot.

Whether you're pursuing therapy for yourself or with your partner, the relationship between us matters a lot in this work. Over time, we'll develop our own rhythm, our own shorthand, and our own way of getting at things. I'll push you when I think you need it, and I'll find the absurdity in the mess when that's what the moment calls for. If that sounds like what you're looking for, I would love to hear from you.
