Professional statement

Maria is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in Brooklyn, NY who specializes in issues related to People Pleasing, Trauma, and Relationships. She also has experience working with clients navigating systemic challenges around immigration and identity and the stress and anxiety that often accompany the experience of people who are non-white.

She explores and integrates somatic therapy as part of her work with clients, which is often informative in self-awareness and in recognizing patterns that may be repeating themselves. In addition to traditional talk therapy sessions, Maria is an EMDR provider and continues to train and grow in this modality. No matter the intervention, Maria is warm, open and direct, helping to clarify patterns that are not serving you, without shame or judgment.

While therapists often have extensive training and practice doing therapy, you are the one who is the expert in your life. Maria approaches therapy as a partnership where you work together to do the work in a way that best serves you to meet goals as you define them.

Trust and sense of safety are foundational to every relationship with a therapist; Maria feels strongly about creating this in the context of technology and AI. She is clear about offering AI-free therapy and uses no AI note-takers or other tools that risk the storing or sharing of your information.

Message to clients

Therapy can feel daunting getting started—the idea of meeting a new person with the intent of sharing personal, complicated, vulnerable things about yourself can be overwhelming. I am really interested in getting to know you on your terms at your pace. We’ll be curious about you together, without judgment and with compassion.

And, crucially, it is also important that therapy not always feel heavy. We can also use humor and play, because that’s also a part of who you are and what will help us in the work of therapy. Often times, the things that are hardest to say or feel are the things that we need to explore, and we couldn’t do that without a little well-placed levity. That can help us make space to imagine what can be different and easier for you, or simply remind you what it feels like to have fun for a bit.

My main job is to help you feel secure enough to sit with and explore what is uncomfortable/scary/in the way. We don’t have to know exactly how to resolve the issue right away, we just have to be willing to be curious, persistent and a little bit brave.
