Professional statement

Micaela Magazzu-Alaman is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California and Colorado. Micaela works with children (7 years old and up), adolescents, adults, and families to live the life they want to live. Micaela is exceptionally knowledgeable and sensitive to clients struggling with anxiety, Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BRFBs, such as trichotillomania and skin-picking disorders), work/school stress, depression, ADHD, major life transitions, burnout, Highly Sensitive Person Trait (HSP), and women's issues.

Micaela works from a systemic frame of reference and considers the whole family in treatment. She is a collaborative clinician who will help people tap into their current resources and build new skill sets to overcome life’s obstacles. Micaela's theoretical approach to therapy includes mindfulness, Feminist Family Therapy approaches, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), as well as Play Therapy approaches for her younger clients. Micaela has specialized training in DBT and CBT approaches and best practices for working with individuals with BFRBs. Through Micaela's clinical expertise and therapeutic relationship with her clients, individuals and families can build mindfulness skills, learn ways to regulate emotions, tolerate distress, communicate effectively with family and friends, and ultimately live the life they want.

Dedicated to fostering social justice and inclusivity, Micaela is an ally of the LGBTQ+ community and advocates for racial justice. She also affirms neurodiversity and promotes a sex-positive and body-positive environment. Micaela actively works to challenge and divest from practices and norms within the mental health field that uphold oppressive systems and supremacy culture, embrace a liberation-oriented approach, and prioritize cultural humility within her practice.

Micaela offers remote telehealth sessions across California and Colorado to allow flexibility and convenience so therapy can fit into your busy life.

Message to clients

Therapy can be intimidating, and finding the right therapist can be challenging and even overwhelming. So how do you pick the right person for you?

When choosing a therapist, it is essential to consider the specialties, education, and training. Yes, you probably already knew that part. I like to remind potential clients that their relationship with the therapist is just as important. Finding the best-fit therapist for YOU is essential to progress along your journey. The therapeutic relationship is a unique experience and probably unlike any relationship you've had before. I hope to provide my clients with a welcoming and accepting space to set down the heavy weight of the world they carry day-in-and-day-out during our sessions. I offer an initial consultation phone call to learn a little bit more about what you are looking for, answer any questions, and see if we would be a good fit. Anticipating having your first session can be anxiety-provoking for some, and having to meet a new person, in general, can be stressful. The first couple of sessions is all about us getting to know each other and figuring out what you hope to gain from coming to therapy. We set the judgments aside and connect on a human level. I am here to walk with you along your path and help you find new ways to cope with the things that get in your way.
