Professional statement

Peter Vandersteen offers telehealth appointments only. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Washington and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Idaho. Peter works with adults (18+) who feel they are struggling to manage their lives effectively because of their anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance use, or trauma backgrounds. This may include intense self-doubt, which can negatively impact their relationships, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Peter’s approach to therapy begins with growing a client’s understanding of the self. His goal is to teach clients how to lead a healthy relationship with the self so they can live authentically and according to their personal values, which can improve their relationships. He practices a therapy approach called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which helps individuals move past painful memories that often lead to emotional reactions. He also practices Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), two thoughts-based therapy approaches that promote healthy patterns.

Peter earned a Master’s degree in Addiction Studies from the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies. He has over 12 years of experience working in the mental health field and also holds a certificate in EMDR from the EMDR International Association. His style is validating and curious, providing clients with the support they need to improve their lives.

Message to clients

It is helpful to have someone to confide in and to discuss your personal challenges with. I aim to create a safe place for you to do so without the fear of judgment. My goal is to provide you with objective feedback and the opportunity to challenge long-standing negative beliefs about yourself in hopes of bringing self-awareness and mindfulness to the forefront. Together, we can reprocess painful memories and long-standing beliefs that keep you stuck.

Life is all about relationships. A healthy relationship with "self" leads to healthy relationships with others. Everyone encounters stress, but not the same types of stress. Adverse childhood experiences play a significant role in how we develop emotional resiliency and trust. The level of support and validation received in childhood directly affects our ability to trust and connect with others in adulthood. When our emotional and/or physical needs aren't met, we develop self-limiting beliefs that are often accompanied by self-destructive behaviors.

If you feel you are not living to your fullest potential and are trapped between the regrets of yesterday and the fears of tomorrow, I encourage you to reach out for help!
