Professional statement

Phillip Lowry is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Registered Yoga Teacher, and First Degree Reiki Practitioner, and provides a holistic approach to improving his clients' mental health and overall wellness.

Phillip uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness, and yoga to help clients struggling with anger management, anxiety, mood disorders, and trauma (yoga is optional for clients who are interested). He combines traditional therapeutic counseling with meditation, concentration, and ethical guidelines that are emphasized in yoga practices to help his clients understand their thoughts and feelings, as well as the consequences surrounding them.

Phillip truly believes in the importance of cultural competency within his practice, allowing cultural differences to enhance his relationship with his clients through respect and understanding. Phillip's past work experience includes clinical counseling at a community mental health center, and working as a social worker for the State of RI.

Message to clients

I realize you may feel shame or guilt in response to experiencing symptoms of a mental health disorder. You may have stereotypes as to what it means to be diagnosed with a disorder and to undergo treatment. I feel it’s important for you to understand you are more than a diagnosis, and your worth is not defined by your diagnosis. I believe sometimes we are simply suffering in response to a challenge presented by life. We can work together to find the path out of your suffering.

Specialties

Cultural competency - Understanding clients from their background and identity, instead of the therapist's background. Sees clients who are frustrated by the power/privilege in institutions, challenges in college or in not getting promoted at work, etc. Has particular experience working with clients in the African, African American, Latino, and Hmong communities

Trauma - Includes arrest trauma, legal challenges, emotional trauma from relationships; work with couples and families struggling through difficulties; uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, breath work, and mindfulness (does not specialize in trauma from sexual assault, robberies, terminal illness)

Depression and mood disorders - Providing support and promoting healing of hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life

Adolescent work - Working with adolescents, teenagers, and parents on social, academic, and/or emotional challenges throughout teenage years; addressing anxiety, family conflicts, peer relationships, school stress, transition to college, social media pressures, self-esteem, hopelessness about the future, emotional dysregulation

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)

Anger management - Addressing sudden outbursts of anger or sustained resentment; developing healthy anger expression and outlets
