Professional statement

Dr. Rob Walters is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist located in Chicago, IL. Dr. Walters sees clients who are in need of specialized treatment and may have active mental health concerns - such as anxiety, panic attacks, or depression - as well as those who aren’t quite sure if they’re ready for therapy. For those who have a suspicion that their mental health needs attention but can’t verbalize what exactly is out-of-place, Dr. Walters conducts a thorough assessment to guide their sessions and allows clients to feel comfortable in therapy before processing through their stressors.

With an extensive crisis intervention history, Dr. Walters is passionate about helping clients who feel particularly distressed as a result of trauma or addiction. He understands that trauma and addiction often go hand in hand and uses trauma focused strategies. He also adjusts his addiction treatment approach as indicated by the client's readiness for treatment while emphasizing a reduction in problematic substance use behaviors. Dr. Walters utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) when working with clients, drawing attention to the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions. He also focuses on a client’s interpersonal relationships and may ask about conflicts with friends and family in a safe and supportive setting.

Dr. Walters previously worked with veterans and active military personnel. He owns and runs a private practice that specializes in Psychological Assessment, Neuropsychological Assessment, as well as offers long-term therapy for the community. Dr. Walters earned his PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and supports his clients through learning more about themselves, processing through previously untouchable feelings, and guiding them towards greater well-being in their daily lives.

He has accumulated over 20 publications with the most recent being on cognitive aspects of PTSD.

Message to clients

Hello and thank you for considering me as your mental health provider. I believe in meeting clients where they are in terms of readiness for treatment and hope to work towards meaningful change together. I own and manage a solo practice and keep a controlled caseload that allows me to offer more specialized attention and focused treatment for each client. I offer some flexibility when it comes to session frequency and weekly sessions may be what you are looking for but there also times when you may need to meet more than once week, bi-monthly, or less regular maintained sessions.

Emotional distress can manifest in a number of ways which may include panic attacks, irritability, sadness, impulsivity, excessive worry, grief, nightmares, feeling generally overwhelmed, difficulty coping, among many other variations. Trauma may also surface in ways that be can be difficult to understand at first. I believe that a strong therapeutic alliance is essential to exploring, processing, and developing additional coping strategies. Treatment can take on a variety of shapes and forms and I look forward to understanding your emotional experience.

I am an LGBTQ ally and provide treatment in a safe space.

If you have any questions or would like to set up an initial appointment then please contact me via email or phone.
