Professional statement

Shawna Herbst is a licensed clinical social worker with 18 years of experience. Shawna welcomes clients seeking therapy for anxiety, stress, life transitions, grief/loss, burnout and work/life balance, relationship issues, women's health issues, and caregiver burden. Many of her clients come to see her when they are feeling overwhelmed, when difficulties are beginning to impact their work, relationships, or self-care, or who may feel uncertain about how to make a change in their life. Shawna often sees women seeking help with balancing multiple roles with self-care, health care professionals, caregivers, those wanting to focus on attachment issues affecting relationship with self and others, or those seeking help with stress management.

Shawna's therapy approach is informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness-based practices including mindful self-compassion. She works to help her clients recognize unhelpful patterns getting in the way of living with more ease and acceptance and move toward what is most important to them. With a warm and collaborate style, Shawna supports her clients in exploring the aspects of their current challenges and opening up to new possibilities and perspectives, while respecting and honoring the person's individual life experience and background.

Shawna graduated in 2006 with dual master's degrees in social work and public health from Tulane University. Shawna has worked in a variety of settings. Most recently, she was a therapist with Stanford Outpatient Psychiatry working in women's wellness, geriatrics and neuropsychiatry.

Shawna is also a certified mindfulness meditation teacher. In addition to individual therapy, she offers structured mindfulness skills sessions in which she helps her clients slow down and find ease with what is happening, have compassion for self and others, and re-engage with life with openness, curiosity and renewed interest and joy.

Message to clients

It can be helpful to have a regular time and space to talk with someone, a neutral person in your life, about what you're struggling with the most. I aim to create a safe and comfortable space for you to be you, to be able to share whatever is coming up for you. My clients have shared with me that they feel comfortable with me from the get-go and after the initial session say they felt seen and heard. For those who have engaged in my mindfulness skills sessions, they have shared it has changed their life in that they have a practice in place to turn to when things feel out of control or overwhelming and that these practices have helped them to feel more calm, more accepting in their relationships and better able to manage life's curve balls.

As a therapist, I feel it is an honor to be in the position to partner with you on your journey. I know the process of finding a therapist can be overwhelming and even scary. If you feel we may be a good fit, please contact me for a free phone consultation. I'd be happy to talk with you and share how I can help.

I provide virtual therapy on weekdays throughout the day and some early evenings.
