Professional statement

Dr. Shemya Vaughn provides counseling to people in BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities who are living with anxiety, depression, and trauma. She specializes in working with adults recovering from childhood abuse and neglect; adults raised by emotionally immature parents. Sometimes this means helping people recover from abusive romantic relationships as well.

Dr. Vaughn's aim is to decolonize therapy using a trauma-informed approach to make sure people in the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ community feel safe, affirmed, and validated in the therapy space. She adjusts her therapy approach depending on your personality and/or what issues you want to work on. People have called her a thought companion who helps them notice their blind spots.

Dr. Vaughn has her master's degree and doctorate in rehabilitation counseling and received training in crisis counseling, sex therapy, queer affirming therapy, and providing adjustment therapy to people with disabilities (adjusting to having a medical or mental health diagnosis as an adult). In her previous careers, she was a counseling professor, a college counselor, and an employment counselor for Veterans.

Schedule a free 15-minute video consultation to determine if the two of you are a good fit. She is licensed in California and Missouri and provides virtual therapy sessions Monday - Thursday in the afternoon and evening.

Message to clients

Allow me to become your thought companion on this mental health journey toward joy. People of color and people living in the queer community deserve to not only survive the systems of oppression and marginalization that we navigate, but we also deserve to thrive. Those of us experiencing anxiety and depression while also healing from trauma need to work with a therapist who gets it.

Let’s work together to place you on a path to transformation. You have an idea in your head already about what kind of amazing life you want to build, and you may view anxiety, depression, and trauma as obstacles or barriers to this new life. We can decolonize the therapy process by helping you unlearn unhealthy and unhelpful lessons and habits you were taught in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. These lessons and habits do not serve you; they do not affirm you or validate you. Let’s build a new way of viewing yourself and your life.

You have the power to take action and change the direction of your life starting today. We can partner together to create a new way of thinking, a new worldview, and use that foundation to create a life of softness, a life of ease, and the ability to rest and recover when life is not soft, when life is not easy.
