Professional statement

Dr. Keefer is a Licensed Professional Counselor located in New York, NY. Dr. Keefer is passionate about helping individuals and couples become “unstuck” - whether this means making a tough decision, instigating change, improving communication techniques to feel heard, or more. She works with clients to build self esteem and gain insight from their thoughts. Many of Dr. Keefer’s clients suffer from addictions, whether that’s to substances, unhealthy relationships, or harmful habits.

Dr. Keefer blends her therapy experience with yoga and meditation practice to create a holistic, empowering journey for her clients. By talking about physical health like diet, exercise, and sleep patterns, Dr. Keefer ensures that both the body and mind receive therapeutic attention. She supports clients as they explore their thoughts and notice unhealthy thought patterns. By equipping clients with coping tools in the face of uncomfortable or harmful feelings, Dr. Keefer helps clients break free from old ways and establish new, healthier habits.

Dr. Keefer has a PhD in Social Psychology. As she helps clients with their anxiety, depression, or inner conflict, she leans on humor and compassion in session to make sure everyone feels comfortable.

Message to clients

My primary goal as a therapist is to help you to negotiate whatever difficult mindset or situation you are struggling with. This is a twofold process: gaining insight into your life circumstances, and developing the agency to improve them. My role is to hold up a mirror so that you can begin to develop a more accurate perception of who you are. We can all be blind to our weak spots - but there are always hidden strengths to be discovered too...

I work with individuals experiencing a range of psychological concerns, including trouble adjusting to life circumstances, mood disturbances (anxiety or depression), and/or struggles with addiction. I also work with couples experiencing relationship difficulties, such as frustrating communication patterns or an inability to effectively resolve conflict.

I am versed in cognitive, behavioral, and psychodynamic theory/practice, and am particularly drawn to techniques that emphasize the mind/body connection. With 20 years as a yoga practitioner/ teacher, I am a strong believer in the benefits of lifestyle change - exercise, nutrition and meditation - in improving psychological health.

Starting therapy can be difficult, but it can also be the first step towards a more fulfilling life. It is important to find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable, respected, and heard: a good fit between therapist and client is necessary for any meaningful progress to be made. I offer a free 10-15 minute consultation by phone or video so that we can see if we can work well together.
