Professional statement

Todd Nelson is a therapist and licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in Chicago, IL, specializing in mental health, life transitions, and the overall wellbeing of his clients.

Todd Nelson has experience working with adults, teens, seniors, veterans, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Todd has worked with clients in both outpatient and acute inpatient settings. He has worked with clients diagnosed with various mental illnesses, terminal illnesses, trauma survivors, and who are going through various life transitions.

Todd uses empathic listening, and asks many of the questions his clients have yet to be asked. He finds his strengths are the ability to listen, convey genuine compassion, and to help his clients open up to him in ways they have not felt safe to do before. Todd primarily uses psychodynamic, humanistic, family systems, and mindfulness based approaches in therapy.

Todd graduated with his masters degree in clinical social work from the University of Chicago. Prior to entering private practice in 2023, he spent 13 years working for the VA, serving veterans from all backgrounds, all of whom stepped forward to serve. Todd worked for the VA in acute psychiatry, palliative care, and in inpatient medicine. There Todd worked with many veterans with many different multifaceted issues, and helped them reclaim their strengths and lives. During that time, he also supervised numerous social work students, on their way to earning their own degrees.

Todd meets with clients, both in person and virtually. Todd has an office at 4801 W. Peterson Ave, in Chicago, at the corner of Peterson and Cicero, with free parking in the building lot.

Message to clients

Each client is a unique and whole person, not "broken" or "crazy". We all face challenges in our lives, and sometimes those challenges bring us here for help with another perspective. I can help you with that other perspective. While I will not tell you what to believe, what to think, or how to feel, I will ask you questions you may not have been asked before, and listen to you from another point of view. Regardless of what you are facing, you will always be safe in my office.

I meet my clients where they are at. This does not only apply to where you are at in therapy, but also in terms of our sessions. I am open to both in person sessions in my office, as well as virtual sessions. I believe that was therapists, particularly in the post COVID-19 crisis world, we need to make therapy more accessible. Thus, I am open to using as many safe and appropriate means of conducting therapy sessions, as possible.
