Professional statement

Vanessa Gallagher is a Licensed Professional Counselor located in Austin, TX and sees clients virtually throughout Texas. Vanessa cultivates an inclusive, relaxed and welcoming environment that makes it comfortable to take a deep breath and explore the places where people feel stuck. Vanessa works with adults dealing with difficult transitions, grieving losses and working through depression or anxiety with a particular love for helping people find healing from traumatic or distressing childhood family dynamics. In her work with romantic partners and parents, Vanessa supports others to develop healthy dynamics, repair communication and connection breakdowns and figure out what couples want and need in order to move forward. Vanessa's consulting work with organizations allows her to offer a unique perspective to individuals dealing with work related stressors or growth goals.

Vanessa’s therapy style draws from the Gottman Method with couples, which is a popular approach to helping partners understand each other’s emotional reactions to conflict. This type of therapy is helpful for those who are about to get married, those who are going through divorce, or those who feel a sense of chronic conflict with their partner. Vanessa also uses elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with all of her clients, emphasizing the interconnected roles of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In a session, Vanessa may use relaxation or mindfulness activities to guide a client through periods of high stress.

Vanessa earned her Masters degree from St. Edward's University. She also works with companies and organizations to support the wellness of employees. Vanessa is an ally for LGBTQIA clients and has over 25 years of experience working with people.

Message to clients

When people ask my why I'm a therapist, I have to laugh and tell them I was horrible at math so anything with numbers was not an option. And I'm so grateful that calculus wasn't my thing- as a psychotherapist I've gotten to dig deep and understand the complex and beautiful intersection between our bodies and minds in ways that still leave me in awe. I am constantly amazed and endlessly curious about how and why we make meaning of our experiences and how that understanding influence our mind, mood, relationships and beliefs.

I hope you're excited, even if that comes with some nervousness, about getting started in therapy. I know that the folks who get the most out of working with me are willing to try new approaches, consider different ways of looking at situations and can sometimes laugh at the absurdities life throws our way. With a little bit of humor, some patience and curiosity, I believe we can discover healing, growth and new possibilities. Plus, no math!
