Therapists Specializing in Aging Related Concerns in Texas

Although older adults can experience many of the same challenges as younger adults, the process of aging brings with it a set of unique issues that can affect our mental and physical health. It’s relatively normal to experience some changes in cognition as we age – memory loss is one example of a cognitive change that can affect an individual’s day-to-day life and impair one’s ability to regulate emotions. Relatively few older adults will experience more significant changes to their memory, thinking, and behavior that may warrant a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to cognitive changes later in life, our risk of developing health and physical problems increases as we age, and we more often must cope with the loss of friends or family. Adjusting to such losses and changes can be understandably distressing and can lead to mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, or sleep disturbance.

If you or a loved one is having difficulty adapting to the changes that come with aging, therapy can help. Seeking support from a trained therapist can help you better understand the unique challenges of aging and help with the development of coping skills and alternative perspectives. Many therapy modalities can be helpful for those dealing with aging concerns; art therapy, for instance, is an example of a modality that can be particularly helpful to those with cognitive impairments, as it does not rely on verbal communication. If you have been diagnosed with a neurological condition, such as dementia, you may benefit from seeking more specialized care from a clinician specifically trained in this area.

Are you feeling anxious, depressed, lonely or having conflict in your relationships? I am here to help. I believe in treating each patient individually. Some types of clients and problems respond better to some types of interventions than others. Often the presenting problems of anxiety and depression are merely the surface of more long standing difficulties. I work to assess what each patient needs most. While compassionate and nonjudgmental I challenge clients to strive for their best selves. Change can sometimes be difficult but we can navigate it together.

Sometimes it is hard to reach out for help when things in your life go wrong. You may be influenced by your culture to think that you are crazy if you seek help for your mental health concerns. I want to let you know that I provide a safe place for you to be who you are, feel what you feel so that you can go through the healing process, and be motivated to set boundaries in your life and make better choices.

Getting therapy takes courage and I want to commend you for taking the first step in your healing journey. In the process of therapy, things may get worse before they get better, but if you stick with it, do the work in and out of session, then you will have what you need to chart your own course in life and for the future.

The first thing you will need to do is connect with me, complete the necessary documents online, and schedule your first session. It is that easy. Everything we discuss is confidential and protected by HIPAA law. One thing I must make sure you understand is that I am not a crisis counselor. It is best that you call 911 or go to your local emergency department if you are having a mental health emergency. I can work with you and your psychiatrist to assure that you are getting the best care possible.

Life can offer unexpected challenges. During trying periods, it is natural to need additional support and guidance. However, the decision to reach out for help can often be intimidating. My goal is to provide a welcoming environment where clients feel comfortable discussing sensitive and personal topics. My approach is both collaborative and goal-oriented. I welcome feedback from clients and utilize that feedback to tailor the treatment approach. I recognize that therapy is not one size fits all. In my practice, the treatment plan is individualized to the client and often evolves throughout the treatment process.

Typically clients are initially seen weekly. As the client begins to progress and meet treatment goals, the sessions are usually spaced out every other week or once a month. Of course, I am flexible in my timeline and realize that every client works at a different pace. My ultimate goal is to provide the client with the skills that they need to move forward with their lives. The treatment modalities utilized (CBT, ACT, etc.) are meant to be short-term treatments with long-term results.

If you have any questions about my practice or approach to treatment, please feel free to reach out to me.

Life is a gift, a song waiting to be sung. But life can be hard. Whether it’s a lifetime of bad breaks, heart-rending losses, crippling anxiety or you’re looking to occupy your place in the sun, we can encourage new skills and a mindset to thrive. Building a rich and meaningful life means taking a risk. As your ally, I take that risk with you. I help make your growth simple--not effortless, but simple and achievable..

I base my work on a deep belief in the power of the therapeutic relationship. I also deeply believe in the effectiveness of research-supported techniques like CBT, DBT, ACT. But it’s the therapeutic relationship that brings those techniques to life. It creates a dynamic synergy that’s larger than the sum of its parts -- like H20 is more than Hydrogen and Oxygen. I offer psychoeducation, role-plays and often ask my clients to journal between sessions with words, music, art or poetry to help process their emotions. I’ll walk with you as we look back on the past and we’ll look forward to envision what could be. We’ll detect the pivot points, anticipate the roadblocks and try out your work-arounds.

My special passion is integrating my clients’ religious/spiritual beliefs into traditional therapy. I identify as Christian but I’m religiously multi-lingual. I was raised in the church but I’ve been around the block. Of course, it’s not necessary but if you’d like, we can integrate your spiritual life into psychological traditions.
