Therapists Specializing in Drug Addiction & Abuse in Rhode Island

Drug addiction refers to the experience in which an individual has difficulty controlling their use of a substance in a way that is compulsive, consuming, and results in potentially harmful consequences.

Substance-related and addictive disorders are diagnosable mental health conditions that involve the use of drugs, such as cannabis, opioids, hallucinogens, or sedatives. Misuse of other types of substances that also impact an individual’s wellbeing and everyday life is equally important to treat.

Drug addiction and abuse requires specialized and knowledgeable therapeutic care, often for both the individual experiencing addiction or in recovery, as well as their family and loved ones. The following therapists in Rhode Island have been vetted for their expertise in addiction, including the use of harm reduction and motivational interviewing techniques. They can help you or a loved one understand the role of substances in one's life in order to lessen their impact.

If you are struggling, you do not have to go it alone. I draw on various interests and techniques to tailor my approach for each client. We can work on resolving difficulties from the past while learning how to create more peace now.

I listen empathically, and gently confront and challenge clients when they are ready. Therapy should be a safe environment where you can push yourself to explore new ways of thinking.

My areas of clinical interest include addiction, trauma, depression, anxiety, and issues surrounding gender and sexuality. I am particularly passionate about the intersection of trauma and addiction.

I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for the treatment of trauma, and have additional experience with EMDR for addictive and compulsive behaviors.

Whether this is your first time seeking therapy, or you have engaged in therapy in the past, we will work together toward cultivating the self-awareness and tools you need to make lasting change. My belief is that you already have everything you need to be your best self and live a full and meaningful life. If you’re reading this, it’s likely you’ve encountered some obstacles in your path. Maybe it’s difficulty coping with a transition, or feeling unsure about 'What’s next?' Maybe you struggle with painful emotions or a depressed mood. Maybe you have suffered a loss or a trauma. Whatever brings you to therapy now, my role is to provide a safe space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings and help you get unstuck from the patterns of thinking and behavior that are no longer serving you.
You are doing the best you can. I truly believe that. And you have likely developed ways of pushing away a difficult past or challenging emotions that are simply not working for you any longer. Not to worry, therapy is not about diving headfirst into the deep end of your pain and suffering. Rather, it’s about gently (and with loads of self compassion!) helping you learn and practice the skills you need for tolerating and being with your experience so that you can better understand it and move forward. With self awareness comes choice, and with choice the ability to learn new ways of coping with the stressors life throws your way.
We will work collaboratively on developing a plan that will help you reach your goals. We will discuss the pace, frequency of visits, and duration of treatment. I tend to be very active in session, so if you have had the experience of 50 minutes of nodding and ‘mm-hm’ you will not get that here! I will listen carefully and ask thoughtful questions to help you challenge long held thoughts and beliefs and explore different perspectives. I use humor when appropriate (yes, you can laugh in therapy!) and will offer direct feedback (with your permission of course!) I am not perfect, don’t have all the answers, and so do not expect that from you!

I think of therapy as conversations that help people address the problems that are interfering with their lives. I help clients separate from these problems and support them in moving towards what they care about most--their values, hopes and dreams. I believe that the best therapy is a collaborative process where the therapist and the client share in the investigation of the the client’s concerns and the potential solutions. I ask exploratory questions that lead clients toward insights and discoveries. Together we develop simple, achievable action plans.

I believe that the ability to make positive change lies within each client I work with. I provide a safe place for you to explore important questions about the challenges you are facing in your life, while helping you to build the understanding that the answers lie within you--I simply help you uncover those important points of clarity during our work together. I approach each individual and situation from a strengths-based perspective, free from judgment and free from shame. From that place of acceptance, I work to help you move toward the goals you hope to achieve, and gain freedom from your anxiety, anger, shame and other issues that may be keeping you from reaching your potential.
