Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

I offer a therapeutic modality called KAP.

KAP is a holistic modality in which the medicine is used as a complement to psychotherapy to help eligible patients experience more frequent breakthroughs and sustained improvement in symptoms. I take on the psychotherapy portion of the experience.

Below is more information about KAP to help you navigate if it may be a good fit for you.

What is it?

It is a legal, safe and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and PTSD. It has rapidly- acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within 1-2 hrs. after treatment. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. It has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement.

It can be administered in a variety of ways, including IV infusion, intramuscular injection, via nasal spray and using sublingual lozenges.

How Does it Feel?

The effects, which most patients find pleasant, last for approximately 45 minutes. These effects can make you feel “far from” your body, and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature. Your motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once these effects subside, we’ll spend the remainder of our appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience. While it may feel hard to articulate what happens during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are clear.

How does KAP integration work?

5 of the most common types of group therapy:

- Psychoeducational groups

- Skills development groups

- Cognitive behavioral groups

- Support groups

- Interpersonal process groups

Group therapy is as effective as individual therapy, and more affordable.

Group therapy sessions can also facilitate a shared sense of belonging and acceptance of one another. Talking through feelings and experiences in a group can help relieve pain, guilt, and stress (APA, 2024)

Common group therapy activities can include:

- Icebreaker activities that help group members get to know one another

- Gratitude activities, such as mapping different aspects of their life that they are thankful for

- Sharing activities, where group members ask one another questions

- Expressive writing activities to explore experiences and emotions connected to those events

- Goal visualization activities to help people set goals and make a plan to accomplish them

What Group Therapy Can Help With!

Group therapy is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including:

- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) and/or neurodivergence

- Eating disorders / unhealthy eating habits

- Generalized anxiety

- Panic

- Phobias

- Post-traumatic stress (PTSD)

- etc.

In addition to mental health conditions, CBT-based group therapy has been found to help people cope with:

- Anger management

- Chronic pain

- Chronic illness

- Chronic stress

- Divorce

- Domestic violence

- Grief and loss

- Weight management

There are several advantages of group therapy:

- Support, Safety and Encouragement

Group therapy allows people to receive the support and encouragement of the other members of the group. People participating in the group can see that others are going through the same thing, which can help them feel less alone. The setting allows people to practice behaviors and actions within the safety and security of the group.

- Role Modeling

Group members can serve as role models for other members of the group. By observing someone successfully coping with a problem, other members of the group can see that there is hope for recovery. As each person progresses, they can, in turn, serve as a role model and support figure for others. This can help foster feelings of success and accomplishment.

- Insight on Social Skills

By working with a group, the therapist can see first-hand how each person responds to other people and behaves in social situations. Using this information, the therapist can provide valuable feedback to each client.

- Affordability

Group therapy is often very affordable. Instead of focusing on just one client at a time, the therapist can devote their time to a much larger group of people, which reduces the cost for participants.

Is Group Therapy for You?

- If you or someone you love is thinking about group therapy, there are several things you should consider.

- You Need to Be Willing to Share

- Especially if you struggle with social anxiety or phobias, sharing in a group might not be right for you. In addition, some types of group therapy involve exercises like role-playing and intense personal discussion, which can be overwhelming for people who are extremely private or uncomfortable around strangers.

-You may need to experience a couple of Groups

- Just like you might need to shop around to find the right therapist, you may also need to try a few groups before you find the one that fits you best. Think a little about what you want and need, and consider what might be most comfortable or the best match for you.

- It’s Not Meant for Crisis

There are limitations to group therapy and not all people are good candidates. If you or someone you love is in crisis or having suicidal thoughts, individual therapy is a better choice than group therapy. In general, group settings are best for individuals who are not currently in crisis.

Group therapy is a scientifically proven powerful treatment modality!

Again, Here are some types of therapy groups:

- Support groups: A group therapy model that helps members share experiences and have in-depth conversations. Support groups can help members focus on communication and problem-solving.

- Cognitive therapy groups: A subtype of psychotherapy that focuses on changing dysfunctional thinking patterns. A therapist can work with a patient to find ways to reroute their thinking patterns to more positive thoughts.

- Skills development groups: A type of therapy that helps individuals develop new skills and strategies to help them navigate their day-to-day lives.

- DBT skills group: A combination of group therapy and individual treatment that helps therapists offer the best treatment possible. DBT focuses on teaching participants a set of behavioral skills that help them cope with their difficult symptoms.

- Anxiety groups: A group that focuses on developing strategies for coping with anxiety. Group members are encouraged to share experiences, discuss assignments, and offer support as members work toward making changes.

- Art therapy: A branch of therapy that combines knowledge about art, psychology, and psychotherapy. Art therapy helps to express thoughts, feelings, and experiences by painting, drawing, gluing, or using any other form of art.
