Elle Bernfeld, LCSW is a therapist located in Brooklyn, NY. Many of Elle’s clients come in to address anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem, and identity. Elle is particularly passionate about working with artists, entertainers, and creative professionals of all kinds. Elle’s passion for this group comes from her own experience previously working in the arts. Elle also has extensive work experience in the areas of substance abuse, LGBTQIA+ issues, eating disorders, and domestic violence. 

Elle’s approach is eclectic, incorporating CBT, DBT, Psychodynamic Theory, Person Centered Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. Elle believes in strengths based trauma informed care helping to empower her clients. Elle helps client identify thought patterns holding them back, identify helpful coping skills, and explore their history to address and resolve trauma. This approach supports clients to improve overall wellbeing, allowing for better expression in their art and in their relationships. Elle’s therapy style is active, accepting, and warm. Elle believes the most important part of therapy is the working relationship between therapist and client, and that a therapy session can include a good laugh AND a cry!

Elle received a MSW from NYU, and an MA in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University. She currently works full time in her private practice, while also writing for Backstage's website as part of their “Backstage Experts” series. A life long devotee to the arts, she attends her weekly movie club religiously, and attends live theater and concerts whenever possible.

Message to clients

Feeling heard and understood is one of the best parts about going to therapy. As an artist, it is easy to feel misunderstood. Between the people that do not understand your career choices, and the people who do not understand depression and anxiety, it can sometimes feel like no one can ever "get" you at all. My goal is to help artists feel less alone, and to help them be the best versions of themselves possible. I’m a therapist and former performer who understands how difficult it can be to balance the life of an artist with your mental health. I also understand that being an artist is not just what you do, but who you are. Together, we can explore your unique therapeutic needs, to help you manage your mental health, excel creatively, and thrive in your relationships.
